CGC hosts annual Staff Gala in Doha

Consolidated Gulf Co. (CGC) hosted its annual get-together gala for staff and their families at the InterContinental Hotel, Doha recently. A grand function was held on the beach side at the hotel’s specially erected Al Waha Ramadan tent in which Raffle draws, best performance awards, musical and magic shows were some of the star attractions.

The large gathering of more than 500 CGC family enjoyed raffle draws, which offered various attractive prizes, including Emirates and Bahrain airlines’ tickets, LCD TV, watches, digital cameras, microwave ovens, traveling kits, perfumes as well as many shopping and dining vouchers. The staff’s kids were presented with gift items and got their faces coloured with designer paintings. The ladies also got chance to have henna carved on their hands. Read the rest of this entry »

It is ‘boom time’ for most city hotels

HOW are Qatar’s hotels faring? Just fine, according to the latest figures obtained from Colliers International’s research. In 2007, Doha achieved the second highest average room rate of $233, after Dubai’s $283. In the third place was Riyadh at $222.

In the second quarter of 2008, Doha was still second highest at $286, an increase of $53 according to the Deloittes Hotel Benchmark Survey. Read the rest of this entry »

Residents yearn for a splash as pool shortage grips Doha

A SEVERE dearth of swimming pools is felt in Doha as Qatar’s population rises every month and people, forced by the summer heat and humidity to stay indoors, want to adopt a health regime that suits the local weather.

Pools at the five-star hotels and recreational clubs are full to capacity, while their timings are not suitable to a large section of the residents, they say.

“I had been looking around to see if any swimming pool is available. But I have stopped trying,” said an expatriate of 10 years, resignedly. “There’s no point in wasting time,” he added.

Layia Hospitality names sales director

Layia Hospitality, a new hotel management company, has appointed Omar Mamlouk as the area director of sales and marketing.

Prior to his appointment, he had worked for a number of international hotel chains. He was director of sales and marketing for Millennium Hotels & Resorts in Doha, Qatar, in charge of sales, marketing, reservations and e-marketing channels, a statement said.

Mamlouk has also worked in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Beirut, Lebanon, where he held regional positions in sales and marketing for Movenpick Hotels & Resorts.

In his new role, Mamlouk will be working on establishing the local, regional and international sales and marketing set-ups of Layia Hospitality.

Launched in early 2008, Layia Hospitality is creating a world-class collection of four- and five-star hotels, luxury serviced villas and fully furnished apartments, with its first hotel property set to open in Dubai this summer.

Three distinct brands will make up the Layia Hospitality portfolio: Layia Hotels, Living Courts and a three-star hotel brand that is soon to be announced.

Layia Hospitality currently has nine properties signed and these will be open in the next 18 months. The company is also in advanced negotiations for six more properties, the statement said. – TradeArabia News Service
